Lionel Hampton and Bill Bergac: Bill give a party to Hamp's  Birthday. 1993, April.

Internationales Jazzfestival Bern: Der Berner Zeitung, 15 mei 2003.
International Jazz Festival Bern, CH. by Ulrich Roth : The Article in German,  Click-

Translating by Christian Fabian, the bassplayer.
Lionel Hampton's small Big Band from the USA received a lot of attention playing the music of the
late master. The fore last week of the  twelve week long Festival was dedicated to the Legend and
his music. Before were scheduled music from Bix Beiderbecke, Count Basie and Dizzzy Gillespie.
The Band consisted of: Two trumpets, One Trombone, Three Saxophones and Rhythmsection.
Most of the Band members played with the master when he was still alive. All these musicians
and their energy's joined together produced an excellent unified sound and great dynamics like hardly
ever existing before in history. Responsible for this all  was Cleave Guyton, a young Alto Saxophone
and FlutePlayer, who rehearsed the music with his colleagues and was leading the Band.
His action without compromise reminded me of a passionate Wynton Marsalis, his high spirit of
Louis Jordan or even a Lionel Hampton. Red Bull might giveyou wings but Cleave Guyton gives you
the Kerosine to fly home - " Flying Home " with a tight rhythm  section brought back the swing era
of the thirties and forties. The world famous solo of this song was coming out unison from all si horns
so strong as if the wall's of Jericho had to fall down one more time.
The Canadian Vibraphone Virtuoso Peter Appleyard was the most happy about this.
He was supposed to be the leader but is happy and honored to play with the band.
The young guys in the band challenged him by whipping out one song after the other without break,
while in the meantime he is looking calmly for his sheet music  which fell down on the floor because of
the musical thunder storm.
The good Peter Appleyard reminds me of Goethe's magician apprentice, with the only difference that
the ghosts are African-American Jazz Musicians.  One or the other may ask himself if this amazing
concert may  make the already gray haired Peter Appleyard ten years older. The contrary is the truth,
because he stands like a rock on a strong windy shore and like Hampton he is inspired to go on
beautiful musical escapades and convinces everyone with a big smiling face: Not ten years older but
ten years younger I got today!

His last words to me were “Doc, How am I going to ever thank you for all you have done for me.”  I said, “No Hamp, it’s the other way.  You have given it all me to me.”  Hamp said,
“No Doc, you don’t understand.”

April 6: Hi Hans, Just thought I'd let you know that Angela and I visited with Hamp this evening and he

Angela is planning on baking his favorite peaches and cream cake for the occasion.
 Warmest Regards, Ron and Angela.

March 3: A Big thanks.
Hi Hans, it has been awhile since you have heard from me. As you know, we have just finished
the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival 2002 and I want to say thank you to Mike Cohen and the Pilots
of the NY based Metro Flight Air Ambulance service, that flew Hamp to the festival.
It was under the watchful eye of Air Medic Mike Cohen that Hamp was able to make the trip and play
the concert. As some of you know, I am an emergency medical technician, was at
Ground Zero on 9/11, and am affiliated with Metro Care Ambulance Group, the parent company of
Metro Flight. I honestly did not think that Hamp could make the trip to the festival this year, but after the
results of the care given to him by Mike Cohen and his crew, don't be surprised if Hamp is there next year.
God bless and take care. Wally Gator Watson - Drummer
